W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy Receives $20,000
From Comerica Bank for Winning Entry

More than 18,000 Votes Cast Online and by Text
DALLAS, Jan. 9, 2009 — Comerica Bank Chairman and CEO Ralph Babb today presented a $20,000 check to the W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy in recognition of Greiner students developing the winning design in the first annual Comerica Bank Vote for the Float Contest held in conjunction with the Jan. 1 Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade in downtown Dallas.

Greiner’s “Save the Earth” float was one of 10 finalists designed by Dallas ISD Middle School students. Winning floats were determined by more than 18,000 votes cast by AT&T wireless texting and by online voting at www.voteforthefloat.com.

“We are grateful to Dallas ISD students and teachers for their support, enthusiasm, creativity and participation,” said Ralph Babb, chairman and CEO, Comerica Bank. “Our city has a very bright future with students as talented as these coming out of our schools.”

“I would like to thank Comerica Bank for thinking creatively and giving our middle school students and teachers the opportunity to think big and take part in a one-of-a kind contest,” said Dr. Michael Hinojosa, Dallas ISD superintendent. “This is one of the most creative contests in which Dallas ISD has been involved, and we are excited that it showcased the talent of our middle school students.”

Winning entries in the Comerica Bank Vote for the Float Contest included:
  • First Place ($20,000) - “Save the Earth” float designed by Christian Rodriguez and Alberto Huerta from W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy. David Blain, principal; Joanna Henry, teacher.
  • Second Place ($1,000) - “All Roads Lead Home” float designed by students from J.L. Long Middle School. Cassandra Soniat, teacher.
  • Third Place ($500) - “Keep Dallas Clean” float designed by students from Quintanilla Middle School. Kate Foster, teacher.

Schools representing the seven remaining finalists each received $500 from Comerica Bank for art supplies. Those finalists included:
  • “Celebrate Community” from Alex A. Spence Middle School
  • “Community All Stars” from W.E. Greiner Exploratory Learning Center
  • “Community is our Strength” from W.E. Greiner Exploratory Learning Center
  • “Dallas Cityscape with Airplane” from Henry W. Longfellow Middle School
  • “Heroes Among Us” from John B. Hood Middle School
  • “Incienso Vivo” from W.E. Greiner Exploratory Learning Center
  • “Trinity River Audubon Center” from Thomas Alva Edison Middle School
