“CELEBRATE ENTERTAINMENT!” AT THE 2010 COMERICA BANK
NEW YEAR’S PARADE IN DOWNTOWN DALLAS J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee Presents $15,000 to Scovell Scholarship Foundation from 2009 Parade Proceeds ![]() “Celebrate Entertainment!” will be the 2010 theme of the downtown family-friendly parade, which benefits the Field and Mary Scovell Scholarship Foundation. The Scovell Foundation provides thousands of dollars in college grants annually for North Texas high school graduates with leadership abilities, strong moral character, financial need and a connection to sports. Today, Babb, on behalf of the J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee, presented a $15,000 check to the Scovell Scholarship Foundation from 2009 parade proceeds. In the three years since renewing the parade tradition in downtown Dallas, the committee has donated $30,000 to the foundation. “Comerica Bank is proud to support an event that benefits young people by providing financial assistance to help further their education,” said Babb. “Not only are we helping these students achieve their dreams, but we also are providing a venue for families to celebrate the many attractions of our dynamic community.” John Scovell, president & CEO of Woodbine Development and son of Field and Mary Scovell, shared today that “The foundation is grateful to Comerica Bank and to the J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee for their efforts to recognize deserving young students in North Texas.” Significant Economic Impact “We are pleased that this New Year’s Parade tradition will continue in downtown Dallas,” said Mayor Leppert. “Last year, more than 100,000 people came into the heart of Dallas to watch the parade and even more saw it on television. Events like this send a clear message that downtown Dallas is on a roll!” According to the Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade helps boost the local economy during a crucial week for local hotels and restaurants. “We encourage everyone to bring their guests and families to the 2010 parade and to make it a day of exploration in and around downtown,” said Phillip Jones, president/CEO of Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Check out the new, spectacular Dallas Center for the Performing Arts, the five great restaurants in One Arts Plaza, the popular Joule Hotel in the Main Street District, the action at Victory Park and Wolfgang Puck’s new Five-Sixty revolving restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Dallas. Make it a weekend at one of our hotels. Shop, dine and enjoy the season.” About the Parade J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee organizers expect that the 2010 Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade will have approximately 80 entries with some 3.500 participants, including the university marching bands and cheerleaders, the world-famous Kilgore College Rangerettes, high school bands and cheer teams from across the country, equestrians, and more than 30 floats and specialty entries celebrating North Texas organizations and attractions. Pep rallies featuring the university bands and cheerleaders from the schools playing in the bowl game are tentatively scheduled outside American Airlines Center following the parade and in advance of the Jan. 2, 2010 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic at the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The volunteer-led J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee is named for Cotton Bowl founder and Dallas oilman J. Curtis Sanford, who spent his own money to start the New Year’s Day football game in 1937 to highlight Dallas. “The J. Curtis Sanford Parade Committee and the Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade continue Mr. Sanford’s vision to showcase Dallas to others across the country,” said John Crawford, president, DOWNTOWNDALLAS, and past president of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association. “The parade ensures that downtown Dallas will continue to play a big role in Cotton Bowl Week, and the parade theme is a wonderful way to celebrate the spectacular new Dallas Center for the Performing Arts, which opens this fall.” 2010 Comerica Bank New Year’s Parade participants attending today’s press conference at Comerica Bank Tower included members of the Townview Center “Big D” Marching Band, Ballet Folklorico de Fort Worth, Eagle Scouts from the Circle Ten Council Boy Scouts, the Golden Retriever Rescue of North Texas and 2009 Scovell Scholarship recipients.
